Health classes explained
Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard: what each tier means and what causes movement between them.
Insurance carriers set term life rates by rate class. Class labels differ across companies, but the framework is standard: Preferred Plus (sometimes Super Preferred or Preferred Best), Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard, with additional tables for elevated risk. Tobacco users occupy a separate set of classes at higher costs.
What underwriters look at
Physical metrics (height/weight relationship), blood pressure and lipid levels, family medical history of cardiac or cancer events before 60, license and accident history, medication history, job function and leisure pursuits, and any use of tobacco or nicotine products. Excellent ratings demand strong results in virtually all areas; Preferred permits slightly more variation; Standard Plus and Standard accommodate managed diagnoses like medicated hypertension.
How to use the quote tool
The health inquiry requests a straightforward self-assessment: Excellent translates to Preferred Plus, Very good to Preferred, Good to Standard Plus and Average to Standard. Your quotes reflect that category; the carrier sets the final classification after reviewing your application. When uncertain, quote yourself at two different levels and weigh the premiums, then permit underwriting to finalize the rating. Overstating your health does not reduce the price; it only makes your estimate less useful.
Susman Insurance Agency can help you identify carriers that are more approving for your particular health situation, which frequently carries more weight than the published rate.
